Understand Films

Since 2011, we have been localising international documentaries, documentary series and factual programmes for the German-speaking market. More than 150 films a year. At our offices in Munich and Berlin.

Films speak a language that everyone in the world understands: the language of images. The grammar is dramaturgy. The script follows the composition of images, atmosphere, music and the voices of the protagonists. It conveys what cannot be seen. Instantly understandable. Because films are meant to be experienced in a linear way.

In localisation, however, an original text already exists. This is precisely where the challenge lies. Our writers examine not only the facts, but also the film's intention. And they question the necessity of every sentence, every word.

Free from vanity. Their writing blends seamlessly with the images. Clear and powerful. It does not overwhelm them. It allows the viewer to feel, reflect and understand.

Anyone who localises films should understand their language.

Our network comprises more than 50 voice artists from across Germany, and we are carefully expanding it. They are professionally trained actors. Masters of their craft. They share our commitment to dramatic authenticity. And they love to perform.

We demand a great deal from our voice artists. The work requires trust. An atmosphere in which talent can fully unfold.

For us, a voice does not merely translate words. It translates emotions.

In many productions, the long-standing approach has been that the German voice should take a back seat so that the original comes across effectively.

That can make sense. But not always. It depends on what the film is trying to convey. Should there be a sense of distance to encourage reflection? Or should the viewer experience the emotions directly? Or does the film require both — depending on the scene?

Our focus is on dramatic authenticity. If the film aims to inform on a purely factual level, we guide the voice-over artist to maintain the necessary distance. If the narrative demands emotional closeness, we work on pronunciation, intonation, rhythm and tempo, take by take. Until the German voice conveys the same authenticity as the original. Until every emotion comes across as credible.

The film itself tells us when the original carries the weight and when the German voice must take the lead. A language we, as filmmakers, understand.

The dramatic power of sound is often underestimated. Yet it is immense. Sound guides emotion. It shapes the atmosphere of a scene—and sometimes of an entire film. That's why we approach sound design and mixing not merely as technical processes, but as part of the film's dramaturgy.

Animations often have to be created from scratch for the German version. Whether 2D or 3D — we recreate motion graphics true to the original and integrate them seamlessly into the film. From the opening sequence through to maps, on-screen captions and the closing credits, German versions are produced as a cohesive whole.

Accessibility requires new ideas. Together with our software partner dubidot, we are developing AI-powered workflows for next-generation subtitles and audio description. For accessible versions of broadcast quality.

For us, AI is a tool. It can speed up workflows, identify errors, generate alternatives and take over routine tasks.

But can AI understand a film?

Before it can translate a film, it must first translate it into its own language: a world of patterns and data. It analyses visual language, dramaturgy and emotion. Yet it does not experience what a film evokes in people. It feels neither suspense nor sorrow, neither empathy nor hope.

Humans take the opposite path. We experience a film — and translate that experience into language.

Films do not communicate through information alone. They communicate through what they make us feel.

That is why deciding what a film intends to convey and how that intention is preserved in a German version remains an editorial task. AI supports us in that process.

But wherever dramaturgy, language and emotion matter, the final decision remains human.
